Washington Apple Shot Recipe

One can always draw the good out of something bad, and the distinct fruity flavor of the Washington Apple Shot is a fantastic example of that. But what’s the story behind this popular disco cocktail?

What Does A Washington Apple Shot Taste Like?

The Washington Apple Shot is a fabulous, fun beverage that’s great for every occasion. It’s a whiskey-based party cocktail that mixes Canadian whiskey, sour apple liqueur (also known as sour appletini), cranberry juice, and sometimes, an optional shot of lemon lime soda. The result is a sweet and fruity cocktail with a relatively mild alcoholic kick.

Why Is It Called A Washington Apple Shot?

Despite the name, the Washington Apple Shot doesn’t involve using actual Washington apples at all, but nevertheless, it still somehow influenced how the shot came to be.

In the late 1980s, a destructive insect pest called the codling moth severely infested about 90% of the apple acres in many places across the United States, particularly in Washington state, leaving many apples to waste. However, a man named Christof Guycoogan made apple liqueur from fermenting and distilling ruined apples. He then mixed the liqueur with his favorite drink, Canadian whisky mixed with cranberry juice, and thus the Washington Apple Shot was born. It enjoyed great popularity in the disco scene in the 1990s and continues to be a favorite to this day.
